Tanghulu is a symbol of many Chinese childhood memories. Until now, it is still one of the most popular snacks in Chinese streets.
What is Tanghulu
Tanghulu (simplified Chinese: 糖葫芦) also called bingtanghulu. It is a traditional Chinese cuisine. It is made by stringing wild fruits with bamboo sticks and dipping them with maltose. It tastes sweet and sour. And it is suitable for all ages. It is not only delicious but also very beautiful. The red and wild mountain plants are arranged on bamboo sticks according to their size, and they are covered with crystal clear sugar. When the Tanghulu strung on a special wooden stick, it is tempting and like a small tree full of fruit.
The history of Tanghulu
During the Guangzong period of the Song Dynasty, to treat his wife’s anorexia, a folk doctor invented the sugar gourd. And then, it slowly became popular. During the Qing Dynasty, Tanghulu was prevalent in various parts of China, such as tea houses, theaters, and streets. They have become traditional snacks in China.
Tanghulu recipe
You’ll need:
Hawthorn
300g sugar
150g clear water
How to make Tanghulu
1. Wash the hawthorn and tie it with bamboo sticks.
2. Add the clear water and sugar in a wok. Mix them well.
3. Heat the wok under middle heat until bubbles appear and color change. (Use chopsticks to dip the syrup into the cold water and it will solidify quickly.)
4. Put the hawthorn in the wok and quickly cover it with syrup. Let it cool and serve.
