Bao bun is a kind of food that is easy to satisfy. In China, it is an indispensable food in people’s diets.
What is a bao bun
Bao bun is made from flour and fillings. There are various fillings, and bun skins can be made into various shapes. Steamed buns with soy milk or porridge are the most classic breakfast pairings. It tastes delicious, nutritious, and cheap.
Where can I buy bao buns?
Fresh bao buns can be found at Chinese breakfast shops. You can also buy frozen buns at the supermarket and steam them home.
Bao bun recipe
You’ll need:
For the bao bun skin:
500g flour
5g dry yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
270g clear water
For the filling:
350g ground pork
1 teaspoon ginger mud
1 tablespoon green onion
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon oyster sauce
1 tablespoon cooking wine
1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
2 teaspoons starch
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1 pinch white pepper
100ml clear water

How to make the bao bun skin
1. Mix 270g clear water and sugar in a bowl until sugar melt. Sprinkle the dry yeast in the water and set aside for 15 minutes until a layer of foam appears. Then slowly pour it into the flour and stir while pouring.
2. Mix flour and yeast water into a dough. Transfer the dough in the workbench and knead it until smooth.
3. Transfer the dough in the large bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap and place in a warm place, ferment for 1-2 hours until it to 2 times larger. Knead it again in the workbench until smooth and without air holes inside.
4. Roll the dough into even strips and cut into some equal portions. Then, round and press flat them with a rolling pin.
Bao bun fillings
1. Mix the ground pork, ginger mud, and green onion, 1 tablespoon of light soy sauce, 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of sugar in a bowl.
2. Then, pour 1 teaspoon of oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon of cooking wine, 1 teaspoon of dark soy sauce, 2 teaspoons of starch, 2 tablespoons of sesame oil and 1 pinch of white pepper in it. Mix them well until sticky.
3. Pour 100ml of water 3 times and stir vigorously.
How to shape the bao bun
Dig a spoonful of filling into the center of the bao bun skin and press the skin to wrap the filling. Then, put the bao buns in a steamer, cover and ferment them for 10-15 minutes.
How to steam bao bun
Put the steamer in a wok and heat it with cold water until boiling. Continue steaming it for 15 minutes. Then, turn off the fire, and wait 2-3 minutes. Remove the cover and serve.
